Management of the Accra High School has acknowledged receipt of over 2400 tablets from the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ghana Education Service (GES).
This initiative falls under the government’s ‘One-Student- One-Tablet’ policy targeted at providing teaching and learning systems, digital learning content, and electronic devices to all Senior High and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) schools nationwide.
Speaking at the 101 Founder’s Day Anniversary of Accra High School, Madam Evelyn Nabia, the Headmistress of the school emphasised the need for this declaration to clarify reports purportedly suggesting that the school had not received the promised equipment from the Ministry.
She added that the students would be able to use tablets starting next year after the teachers receive training on the learning modules on these devices to properly instruct students on their use.
Beginning next year, all students in Accra High School, are going to be studying with tablets. As we speak, they’re currently being stored in our warehouses. I state this emphatically because I’ve seen a news item being circulated, that says that Accra High has not received any tablet, and that is false.
“The reason why they haven’t been distributed is because, the learning modules that are on it have to be learnt by the teachers first, so that when we come to class, we can direct students on how to use them.”
The 101 Anniversary of Accra High School was graced by the alumni of the school called Onukpa [Onukpai], clad in the anniversary cloth of black and white representing the colours of the school with images of the founders printed on it, as well as current students, headmasters, headmistresses from other Senior High Schools, among others.
Guest Speaker for the celebration, Methodist Bishop of Accra Diocese, Rt. Rev. Borlabi Bortey, touched on the celebration’s theme, “Restoring Discipline of AHISCO, the Role of Stakeholders”.
He expressed concerns about the current state of the evolving world which makes it quite difficult to train children of the present day.
However, Rt. Rev. Borlabi Bortey called on teachers to be good models of discipline to be emulated by the students.
“Teachers must always be an example to their students. A teacher who is always late or absent from class and doesn’t mark assignments can’t be an example to students. They need to be good role models as their mistakes can mar the lives of their students.
He also tasked parents to facilitate the discipline of their wards and provide the necessary logistics for their academic pursuits.
Parents must be made to learn that they have a responsibility for their children. If we don’t get contributions from parents when it comes to discipline, then we have lost the game. They must ensure the punctuality of their wards at all times and also facilitate their learning at home,” he advised.
Background
Accra High School on Thursday, August 17, 2023, held its Founders’ Day celebration as part of activities to mark its centenary anniversary.
It was followed by a dinner party where at the serene garden of Citi TV at Tesano, on Saturday, December 2, 2023.
It was an atmosphere of nostalgia as old students of Accra High School gathered to have a dinner party amidst dancing, cracking jokes, and networking.
The Citi garden was set agog with the old students in a euphoric mood, trying to catch up with their mates.
The school has produced several illustrious sons and daughters who have risen to the highest levels of society be it in the arts, science etc, ironically, as a school established by a missionary, Accra High School has also produced many men of God in both Christian and Islamic faith.
To ensure the continuity of the legacy of the founder, Rev. J. T. Roberts, there exists a smooth cooperation between the School Administration, the Board of Governors, the Founders’ Family, the Old Student Association, the Parent Association, the Student Body and its neighbours.
The school has four houses: Glover-Addo (yellow), Roberts (blue), Nanka Bruce (green), and Buckman (red).
