Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has disclosed that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is considering Ghana as the host for an upcoming edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Despite recent concerns over substandard pitches in the country, including the banning of the Baba Yara Stadium for CAF Category C matches, the minister revealed that CAF had formally inquired about Ghana’s capacity to host the prestigious club tournament.
“CAF wrote to us that they wanted us to host the Women’s Champions League,” Ussif stated. “It is because they have seen that we have the necessary facilities, thanks to what we achieved during the African Games.”
Since its inception in 2021, the Women’s Champions League has been hosted by Egypt, Morocco, and Cote d’Ivoire. Ghana has had two teams participate in the tournament, with Hasaacas Ladies finishing as runners-up in the maiden edition, and Ampem Darkoa Ladies securing a fourth-place finish last year.
In addition to the Women’s Champions League, Ussif also confirmed that the nation will host the 2024 African Athletics Championships.
Meanwhile, Black Stars coach Otto Addo is expected to name his squad to face Sudan in a doubleheader against Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Ghana will have to host Sudan at another venue following the ban on the Baba Yara with the Ghana Football Association racing against time to submit an appropriate venue for the highly anticipated game.
