Former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah has voiced his disappointment over Ghana’s inability to maintain a single stadium capable of hosting international matches.
His remarks come in response to CAF’s recent directive banning Baba Yara Stadium from hosting Category 3 matches due to poor conditions.
Ghana is now scrambling to secure an alternative venue, with the possibility of playing in another country looming.
Appiah expressed his frustration on X, stating, “Playing a qualifier outside Ghana, except in a tournament, is a national embarrassment. We must prioritize hosting our own games and protect our football pride.”
His frustration echoes the displeasure poured out by many Ghanaians after learning Ghana may end up playing their next game in a neighboring country.
The Baba Yara Stadium, previously the only approved venue in Ghana for international games, was under scrutiny after the Black Stars’ home defeat to Angola. Despite the loss, the focus shifted to the poor state of the pitch.
In response, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has instructed the Ghana Football Association to invite CAF to inspect both the University of Ghana Stadium and Accra Sports Stadium as Ghana races to secure a venue for their upcoming AFCON qualifier against Sudan in October.
